Evening guys....

I have a question and this may be more for the passengers then the drivers but anyone can chime in:b.

Doozer is insistent that he get me a set of passenger arm rest(i think they are called)

and honestly I am scared to death of the thought, tho I know they swing away or at least I assume they do, the thought of them freak me out !

I know all you wingers out there say this and I here it all the time from Doozer "shiny side up rubber side down" and I know that is the theory but S%*t happens and there are ones who either do not care or do not look out for Bikes and the thought of going down with a set of arms to possible trap me with the bike is making me not even want t try them. I realize the husband is just trying to make me comfortable since my medical condition does prohibit my riding on some days but still..........

any thought ???

I've got a set on my 1200 and my wife loves them. I normaly have them just snug enough to stay in position but when she's going for a ride I allways have to tighten them up for her so she'll feel more "secure"..

As far as getting trapped by them, if the worst did happen, I don't see how that could be as mine seem to be made of a bendable metal and are hinged anyway.

My daughter (Baby T 10) loves them, she calls them doors, and will not ride without them, In the event of a whoopsee, I have no doubt they will not be an incumbency in anyway.

I am going to be the first to "go against the grain" so to speak. Only last weekend, on a short ride out with Helen, she noticed the mounting brackets on the arm rest had started to show some rust, and she said to me that if I wanted to take them off she wouldn't miss them. :(

She didn't have any on the 1500 and nore on the 18 when I fist got it, so it is not a case that she wouldn't know what it is like without them.

Being as she is pretty tall, I have seen in my wing mirrors that she doesn't use them much, but can usually be seen resting her elbows/ arms on the padded area where the speakers are. When they are swung outwards they do interupt my wing mirror view some.

I don't think they are anything to be worried about Beth, but if hubby fits them and you don't like them, you can always swing them outwards, out of your way.:)

As a rider, the only thing I like about them is the fact that mine have a cup holder on one of the arm rests, which I tend to use for my coffee cup when we are stationary somewhere. :th

so poor Helen has to undure arm rests just because you need somewhere to put your coffee, shame on you.

Maggie has riddne bikes without them and with them and really misses them when they are not there, she is a little on the short side though

Not a problem Derek, I can remount the cup holder somewhere else. :hs:th

If Helen is using the arm rests, I notice that it is more her hands that are on them, with the elbows resting on the speaker padded area. I have a set of the Hondaline 1800 arm rests that go over the speaker pods and just stick out a bit. Fiddley arsed things to fit, judging by the instructions, but I might just go with them, because I think Helen would prefer them to the current ones. :whatever: If not, watch out for two types of arm rests coming up for sale cheap!! :(

I would have thought that she would have liked arm rests, since she is inclined to doze off on a decent run, all I need to do is instal a TV or DVD to by backrest and that would be it, she would be out for the count, just the same as when she sits down in the settee at home and tries to watch TV. :do:

Arm rest, dangerous??? I do not think so.   They are not going to trap you on the bike, and just maybe in a spill if you have the presence of mind to use them they might help.  Reach forward and grab something and keep your shoulder and arm up off the pavement and let it grind off the trunk and armrest, not you.

I did that one time when young and dumb, and had one speed, I climbed up on the bike and rode it down the road sliding away.

They did not interfere with a life safety issue this past week .  We have some fairly large group rides and I was leading and one of the guys had a mild heart attack. He passed out at the helm, his wife stood up on the rear pegs and held him up, used her right hand to guide the bike to the side of the road out of traffic and got it stopped and hit the kill switch . Just exactly like we have trained them to do.

So they did not trap her or hold her in under those conditions.

Thing is if you go down it will happen so quickly you will most likely not have much time.  If you collide with a vehicle might give you something to grab and hold unto.

But never known them to be a safety issue.  At least not as of yet.

Kit

I have armrest on my 1500. All of the women who have ridden with me say they feel safer with the armrest. In fact, Creekwalker's girlfriend wouldn't ride with him because he didn't have them, so she rode with me instead.

Try'em, you might like'em.

I thank all of you for the information and responses , I guess I just fear the worst and I know what can happen if you go down....I guess I just need to let Doozer put a set on the bike and shut up and just ride...along with holding his coffee !:rolf
You guys are the best !!! It is so funny when I say " The Guys" said this or that and Doozer knows exactly which Forum I am speaking of .... I will continue to promote this forum as ..." The best darn Goldwing forum out there "
Even tho you are on the other side of the pond !
I belong to 4 Goldwing forums ( and I enjoy those as well) but you all make me feel extreamly welcome and comfortable aboard here !:kiss

I said "feel safer" not "safe"!:BG

And actually, there have only been 3 women on the back of my bike...and none of them were my wife!  (and yes, one was my mama.:whatever:)
