Some of the guys at work have been discussing ways of raising funds for a worthwhile cause. They have decided on the Help our Heroes as the beneficiary of any and all funds raised.

The plan is next year, during July, (plenty of daylight hours) 4 guys, all prison officers just like me, are going to attempt to climb Snowden, Scarfel Pike and Ben Nevis  all within a 24 hour period. Me, being the physical and athletic person that I am, have  kindly offered to do the driving (don't do physical sh*t) as my way of assisting them in achieving their goal and raising as much as we can for this cause. Their intention is to start, probably around midday on a Saturday and hopefully complete the first 2 before darkness falls, then drive up overnight to Ben Nevis and to complete that before midday on the Sunday.

I know a lot of you guys do a lot for this cause as well as part of the RBLR groups you are members of, but I may offer the hat round here as well if nobody objects.

Just thought I'd give a bit of a heads up prior to the event and we hope to publicise it as well although this will probably be more locally than nationally in the press in the hope of getting a reasonalbe amout in the pot as well as some sort of sponsorship to assist with the costs of doing so.

I'll keep you posted.:th

Count me in....................................for the fundraising...................not the other stuff.

After those mountains we climbed on the Pitlochry golf course, Snowdon should be no problem for you!

Just checking, is this on behalf of "Help Our Heroes" or on behalf of "Help 4 Heroes"? I am not aware of a Help Our Heroes charity, but then again, what do I know!!

I may have the terminology wrong m8 but this is for our soldiers. A well worth cause if I say so myself. Never been one myself personally, but that does not detract from the fact that I/we believe they are doing a fine job for us and country.

They deserve the backing, recognition and any assistance that we can give them.

Just a wee update on this. Had our first planning meeting today. Looks like it is going to be around 17th July that this will be taking place. Currently working out timings and mileages plus route times for the peak challenge itself.
The whole thing will involve about 7 people. The 4 doing the challenge itself, myself and one other as drivers/navigator and one organisor to try and keep us all together (and boy do we need it)
Got some goodies coming from Help4Heroes and looking at doing some fundraising etc for it. Got plans to have some local events but as I suggested before, might try and put the hat round here as well.
Trying to get a free minibus organised as well. Hoping to set up a "just giving" site in the near future just to make it a bit easier to get donations in.
That's about it for now guys. Onwards and upwards. I;ll keep you all posted as it gets a bit nearer the time.
Gordie

Gordie - Don't forget when doing snowdon you are less than eight miles from here so if you drives need a break come on around.

Homemade cakes and tea...

Dates are good, we have finished school then, and it is just before Andrea and I go to Egypt. I could sit at the bottom of Snowden in a safety vehicle :BG

I have done all three peaks in the past, spent many a weekend walking and camping on Snowden and Scarfel Pike.

Thanks for the offer Crezz, I'll bare it in mind m8.

We are trying to go when there is the most daylight as we don't want the guys going up or down in the dark. It's not only a safety thing but as they are all prison officers, they are scared of the dark...lol

There are different approaches to this whole challenge we are exploring. For instance do they start at Snowdon first thing in the morning and have to climb all 3 before dark that night or do we try to get two in in the first day by starting late morning and then use the darkness for the travelling time and so giving the guys time to recover before hitting Ben Nevis. Personally we think this might be the way to go.

Your talking around 5 hours for Snowdon, 4 hours for Scarfel Pike and 5 hours for Ben Nevis. Trying to fit all that and the driving during the one period of daylight is a bit of a non starter in my eyes. My preference is to do the driving overnight when the roads will be quieter and we can get the foot down a bit.

Getting some of the info together just now for timings to bring to the next planning meeting.

Any info you guys have about the best places to stop overnight, routes for the climbs etc will be greatly appreciated. Personally I know nothing about doing this sort of thing so I have to go by what the others say but if you have experience etc then fire some suggestions to me.....preferasbly ones that will help and not ones taking the p*ss....lol

Hi,
Not posted this anywhere but here so far m8 apart from round all the Scottish Prisons seen as we work for the SPS. we had another planning meeting and I must admit the timings are going to be really tight. Using the AA routemap to calculate driving times might give us some scope to shorten timings slightly but think the actual peak walks themselves will be as planned.

We have 2 drivers so can split the driving. We have the grub sorted with the army boil in the bag rations etc and the offer of any kit we need.

Still trying to get transport organised and hopefully some sponsorship for the fuel. Also got permission to hold collections in the local shopping centre and the Army cadets are going to do bag packing at a couple of supermarkets for us.

It's all go at the moment.

We have just received some of the goodies to sell, wristbands, keyrings, fridge magnets, credit card holders etc

Well, it's all official now. Just been a feature in one of the local rags about the challenge so it's all go now on the fundraising front. We had another meeting about when this event will happen and it's now going to be us travelling down to Wales on the Friday 23rd July where we will stay overnight. From there on the Saturday morning around 10.00 the guys will start the first peak at Snowdon. Once that is completed, around 5 hours later, we pick them up and drive up to Scafell Pike where they will get straight inot the walk up that peak. This should be approximately 4 hours. Collect them again and drive up overnight to Ft William where they will take on the last peak starting at first light. Again, this is around a 5 hour hike and once they come down again, if we have our timings right we should still have approximately 30 minutes to spare before the 24 hour period is up.

After that it will be a slow jaunt back to Inverness for some well earned rest and we plan to meet up later with partners for a meal and a damn good bevy. Nobody is thinking about what nick they will be in for work on Monday morning and knowing my luck they will all be on a backshift and I'll be in early. If it wasn't for bad luck I wouldn't have any luck at all....lol

I was trying to get a link to the local rag The Highland News showing the piccy but all I could do was get a copy of the image from their gallery. I've stuck it up in my pics on the site so hopefully it will show up but i can't figure out how to link it to show in the post itself.

Going to start getting the letters out to businesses in the next week or so to raise sponsorship. We already have a couple of sponsors. A local van hire firm are giving us a minibus free and a local insurance broker is paying for our £5m public liability insurance so we can have a stand for a few days in the local shopping centre.

Fingers crossed it all goes well and we raise an obscene amout of dosh for this worthwhile charity. They all deserve it.

Thanks for listening and if anyone wants to make a donation, we are trying to set up a giving site or paypal account so I'll post up the details here when we get them if that's ok with David.

Gordie
